Becky Brooks

I have been a member of this community for 16 years.  My husband I have 9 children between us and several grandchildren.  Two of our kids attended school in Tecumseh and we now have grandchildren in the district.  I currently sit on the school board as an appointee and have been elected to the board twice.  I am an Account Executive for Devon Title and have been in this industry for over 25 years.

I am a member of the Greater Lenawee Chamber of Commerce, serve on committees for the Lenawee County Association of Realtors, and am an auxiliary member of our local VFW.  I am also a certified board member who has earned the Honor and Merit awards through the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB).

Why I am running for the School Board

I was never involved in politics previously but when I saw changes in our district that concerned me I knew I had to get involved.  I was also very aware that I couldn’t ask others to do something if I wasn’t willing to step up and do it myself.  This led me to be an active part of the recall and to run for my first term.  Many of you know how hard that first year was, however, it taught me so much about serving my community.  I have had to make many hard decisions, but I always keep the district in mind.  I have learned it is not about what I want but what is best for the community as a whole.

Knowing that we have brought the district so far from where we started, I decided to run again to ensure we stay on that path.  This board has achieved so much in the last few years.  We brought us out of a 1.5 million dollar shortfall and low fund equity.  We gave our teachers and staff a nice raise and good contracts, overhauled the curriculum with teacher-driven initiatives, found grant money for many things in our district to avoid layoffs, and worked closely with the community to develop the 5-year strategic plan.  I want to build on our successes by adding more classes offering certifications and job-ready skills to our students.  I recognize that we need to meet the needs of all our students, whether they are planning to head to college, the workforce, or the military.

We have recently hired an amazing Superintendent that I believe is the final piece in getting Tecumseh back to where we should have always been.  Yes, we have some infrastructure issues and we are addressing that through a policy requiring 3% of the budget to be set aside for Capital Improvements.  We are also asking for a 1.75 mil sinking fund.  These two initiatives will help us address the most expensive repairs and allow us to begin a yearly maintenance process that should help us extend the life of our facilities.

I believe our staff is the lifeblood of our district.  We have worked hard to retain the best of the best and want our teachers to feel supported and valued.  I will continue to be a voice that brings encouragement and positivity to our district as we enter this next phase of growth and success.  â€‹
